Heiress to the fortune of an Italian cotton manufacturer, Luisa Casati lived extravagantly. She was known for wearing live snakes and riding in a carriage pulled by cheetahs which she also walked on diamond-studded leashes, wearing leapord-skin coats with nothing underneath, and having nude servants covered in gold leaf. She lived in the Palazzo Venier dei Leoni, which later became the Peggy Guggenheim Collection, where she accumulated portraits of herself and had wax figures as dinner guests. Casati quickly accumulated $25 million in debt. Her possessions were auctioned off and she lived the rest of her life relatively poor. She was buried dressed in leopard fur and false eyelashes with a stuffed Pekingese dog at the foot of her coffin.
